On Thursday, TEDxKabul became the first-ever TED event in Afghanistan. The day dedicated to "Innovation in Unexpected Places" featured mainly Afghan speakers--artists, educators, psychologists, architects, and entrepreneurs to name a few.
TEDxKabul: The Art of the Unexpected is not the first TED event in a war-stricken area. The Washington Post notes that similar events have taken place in Baghdad and Mogadishu. TED curator Chris Anderson, who himself was raised in India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, also made an appearance at the event--indicating the extent to which the company values such events. Anderson tweeted that he was "inspired by many people," at the event.
