Skip the airport security line with CLEAR kiosks

By | October 20, 2012, 1:42 PM PDT

Type A travelers at select airports across the United States may soon be able to bypass that lengthy wait in the security line.

CLEAR, a New York City-based biometrics company, offers travelers who are willing to pay for speedier service the chance to make it through airport security lines in less than five minutes. The CLEAR kiosks can be found in airports in San Francisco, Denver, Dallas, and Orlando and will soon make a debut at Westchester County Airport in New York.

The company uses biometric measures such as fingerprints and iris scans to identify travelers who check into specialized CLEAR kiosks, allowing them to skip a large portion of the wait.

To join the company’s database, users register online and then visit a CLEAR enrollment center with two valid forms of identification such as a passport or driver’s license. At the enrollment center, passengers’ fingerprints and iris scans are taken and they are given a CLEARcard embedded with a smart chip that contains their personal information.

At the airport, passengers can check into CLEAR kiosks, swipe their cards, and verify their biometric data by giving a fingerprint and an iris scan. Once everything checks out, they are free to skip to the head of the line.

The service costs $179 for an annual membership, plus $50 for a spouse or partner.
