Secret Soviet Cold War compound soon a strip club

By | October 22, 2012, 7:57 PM PDT

One of the former Soviet Union’s most restricted sites is destined to become a tourist attraction.

You’ll soon be able to hop on a plane and visit a massive Cold War bunker that lies underneath the Moscow subway system to wine, dine, be pampered at a spa, or receive a lap dance at its subterranean strip club.

Gizmodo today reported on a Russian business venture to convert the once top secret Tangansky Protected Command Point into an underground Las Vegas. The massive 75,000 square foot facility was built to house military commanders in the event that another facility was obliterated by a nuclear strike from the United States.

Now, socialism is out and the socialites are in. Tangansky will soon belong to the bourgeois and hard partying Russian oligarchs. Comrade Stalin, who commissioned the compound probably wouldn’t approve (aside from the heavy drinking).

Travel tip: if you visit Tangansky, don’t miss Chernobyl. It’s open to tourists too.

Been There Two Weeks Ago
I was in Moscow two weeks ago and took the Cold War Bunker tour. It is a bit difficult to organize, but I was lucky to have gotten in on the only English tour that day. The interesting thing is that the bunker is 60 m (about 180 feet) below the street. Going down we had to negotiate stairs for the equivalent of 11 stories. The bunker is remarkably well preserved, even though most of it was taken out. There are four sections and the third section has been converted to this club complex. We took a quick look in there and it is very up-scale and well done. Getting up is by an elevator (original 1950's design and construction) holding no more than five persons. I think that access might be a major problem for this enterprise. Strip Club? Hmmm. Originally the first section was for the command section, the second was for 100 communications women (telephone operators for the most part), the third, where the club is located was for generators, etc, and the fourth for I can't remember what. I wonder what the ghosts of the 100 women operators think of the new activities down there.
