Outsourcing to surge in 2013: study

By | January 28, 2013, 9:10 AM PST

Love it or hate it, outsourcing is here to stay as a standard business practice.

A new study from HfS Research and KPMG International finds little resistance to or plans to cut back on outsourcing any time soon. In the study, 1,355 stakeholders across enterprise buyers, service providers and consultant/influencer organizations finds many see outsourcing as a way to not only keep costs down, but also gain more traction with up-to-date business processes.

“Make no bones about it: 2012 was a pretty dire year for the industry known as ‘outsourcing,’” says Phil Ferscht, analyst with HfS, referring to the negative media attention and stigma applied to the practice.  However, he continued, the data suggests that “the majority of enterprises are not only aggressively focused on increasing their outsourcing portfolios, but many are now taking a more mature and realistic approach.”

The survey primarily covered business process outsourcing, versus manufacturing outsourcing trends. Ferscht observes that among the 399 major buy-side enterprises in the survey, “barely a twentieth are looking to reduce their outsourcing scope across any IT or business function in 2013.” Moreover, he adds, “half of them are looking to increase their outsourcing of application services, four out-of-ten their finance and accounting, and a third their HR. In addition, there is a notable pick up in newer sourcing areas, such as analytics and legal.”

The primary motivations for outsourcing are not surprising: 87 percent seek to reduce operating costs, 81 percent seek greater flexibility and scale, and 74 percent seek to standardize processes.  Ferscht says the drive to standardize is a significant development, as more companies drive to adopt what he calls the old “ADP payroll analogy” — “there is little discernible business reason to run your payrolls yourself these days, and this is ringing true for the rest of the operational functions. Being competitive with business operations is achieved by standardizing onto best-in-class processes.”

Percent of Organizations Ramping Up or Scaling Back on Outsourcing:

Function Starting or expanding
Decreasing
No plans
Application development/maintenance 48% 6% 9%
Finance and accounting outsourcing 40% 5% 29%
IT infrastructure outsourcing 39% 6% 15%
Human resources outsourcing 31% 5% 30%
Procurement/sourcing outsourcing outsourcing
29% 3% 21%
Industry-specific processes 21% 4% 45%
Analytics 24% 2% 48%

A Crumbling Ideal
In the nineties, the idea that "white-collar" jobs were on the rise for the new century was all the rave. With the loss of manufacturing jobs, the thought that everyone would be working in offices was an amazing concept... Of course, I was younger and more gullible back then, but the idea was nice regardless...

Twenty years later, it appears that the white collar jobs did come...and did increase...but what was not noted was that those jobs would go to people in other countries.

Where does this leave our countrymen and women? Continually inflating the currency while restricting pay for the jobs that are here.... hmmm....

And you're actually comfortable implementing "gun control"?

You can't hide under the sheets for much longer...the boogeyman is about to jump on the bed...

Efficiency of operations, and cost-efficiency...
So, what else is new?

Fact is that, those are goals which all companies strive to achieve, and it's been the case since the beginning of time. So, no surprises there.

Why take on or keep more personnel than needed? Why not save money wherever possible? Why not be more efficient while spending less and being more productive at the same time?

Are corporations supposed to be in business just for the purposes of creating jobs? Or, are they in business to produce a service and/or a product? The creation of jobs is an INCIDENTAL set of events that materialize from the entrepreneurship that creates a business.

Jobs that are created for the sake of providing employment, are not productive nor cost effective, and that was quite evident with many corporations in the past, who have had to streamline their operations, and thus, the need to outsource, if that proves to be more economical and efficient and productive.

I bet you did.
Unfortunately, I know a lot of businesspeople who are not. It's a lot different when it's your money and well-being directly on the line. Nobody enjoys letting people go simply because they cannot afford to keep them anymore.

More corporate stupidity
I wish I could ask 'when will it end'.. but I have my doubts that it ever will. It's too deeply ingrained.

This is what happens
Free trade is a great idea, but we all knew when the politicians pushed for free and open trade with 3rd world nations we'd hear "the sucking sound".

Free trade with Germany? Sure, we can compete with them.

Free trade with China? No, I can't compete with 5 grains of rice per hour - but I'm getting there.

Don't outsource your control of quality and cost
One thing the Chinese and others have taught those willing to learn: when you outsource, you may be giving up quality control and cost control. What happens when the supplier cuts corners because you aren't watching or checking? That can kill your company and/or your customers. Watch it!

jobs being lost in the US
The bad news is that there are over 1 million non-US workers in the USA taking American Jobs with the H1-b program. Banker and hi-tech companies claim that they cannot find workers and are allowed to hire non-US workers here in the US in exchange for campain contributions. in other words Corporate welfare or bribe . Politicians don't care about Jobs as much as being re-elected

What about re-shoring?
Interesting given a recent issue of The Economist devotes extensive coverage to the increasing trend of "re-shoring" jobs that were sent offshore over the last 20-30 years. It would appear companies such as GE have done a complete 180 and are bringing the work back to the US.

The Indian call center model has effectively failed, and IT functions are coming back because they are increasingly viewed as critical strategic assets, not to mention the fact that the cost differential (arbitrage) is shrinking while the disadvantages of having important work done 10 time zones away are better recognized. Not to mention the theft of intellectual property that takes place when you send your manufacturing out.

GE has done no such thing!
GE is still one of the companies which has a lot of its business done offshore. They are still the poster child for what offshoring is about.

What GE "re-shored" is a very tiny piece of their offshore operations, and it was, for all intents and purposed, mostly a public relations stunt.

Well, now that Obama has dissolved his "jobs council"...
...Immelt will have extra time available to correct this.

Outsourcing jobs is not the answer.
1. If we don't have enough educated people in America for the increase in Tech jobs then we should make education available to them. 2. If a business can't make money paying wages in America then it should either change its business model or move to another country.

Outsourcing: Guilty Pleasure
Well, basically for me, outsourcing processes is great. Apart from reducing operational costs, internet marketers and outsourcers these days do not only go for it. Instead, they have viewed outsourcing as expanding management operations and seen as making their back office functions less hassle. Truly, outsourcing provides quality business solutions for growing businesses and organizations.

Business Outsourcing this is really what it takes!
Yes, outsourcing services is now been the heat. Every company who gives feedback to their customers acquire an outsourcing services - the call center. From the time outsourcing been introduced to the businessmen, it became a hit and more and more BPO firm are now been established. Since there are too many Outsourcing firm, it's difficult to determine which of those are providing good services. There are also lot's of country who engage in this activity. From india to Philippines. Actually I just seen this business outsourcing in the Philippines catering IT services.

We must bear in our mind in outsourcing, it helps us in many ways, from cost cutting to delivering of the work.
