New Fiat500e gets best-in-class 116MPGe rating

By | January 11, 2013, 4:42 AM PST

Don’t be put off by its diminutive size - Fiat’s new entry into the electric vehicle market, the 2013 500e, packs a powerful punch. The model, which features a 111-horsepower electric motor, received an impressive 116 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) combined fuel economy rating from the EPA (122 MPGe city, 108 MPGe highway). That gives the 500e the highest rating in its class. It also features an official range of 87 miles. Here’s how some other small EVs compare (mileage given as combined/city/highway):

  • 2013 Smart ED: 107/122/93 MPGe, 68-mile range
  • 2013 Scion iQ EV: 121/138/105 MPGe, 38-mile range
  • 2013 Honda Fit EV: 118/132/105 MPGe, 82-mile range
  • 2013 Mitsubishi i: 112/126/99 MPGe, 62-mile range
  • 2012 Nissan Leaf: 99/106/92 MPGe, 73-mile range
The 2013 Fiat 500e is expected to hit the market in California in the second quarter of 2013.

MPGe
What the hell does MPGe mean ??

"Miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPGe or MPGge) is a measure of the average distance traveled per unit of energy consumed." - From Wikipedia.

Sounds lie meaningless tosh to me, as consumption of gas/petrol is a whole different ballgame to Electricity produced in a large scale utility power station, power by Oil/Gas/Electricity/Hydro/Wind/Solar/Biomass ?

The standard petrol 500 TwinAir already does 72MPG (Imperial), though let down by the fact it is a Fiat and they have a terrible reliability and customer satisfaction rating.

Reliability and satisfaction
Frankly, I do not know where you found this self described 'terrible' rating since I
have spoken to at least 14 owners of the Fiat 500, and each felt pleased with their 500. However, if you want a truly dismal car, review the Mini Cooper. This from the standpoint of these vehicles having multiple quality issues. E.g. inoperable windows, faulty radios et al. Probably the biggest problem are the Mini Dealers.
My new Mini came from a dealer in N. Scottsdale, Arizona that flat out refused to
service a number of items within warranty. Miraculously, after the warranty period he agreed to repair anything....on my dime.

Another let down?
Will this car be another in an already long line of evs that don't live up to their rating or range? It doesn't matter what the epa says if production models fail to achieve or maintain those ratings in actual use. Here in central Arizona several Leaf owners are reporting early loss of battery capacity due to - surprise! - the heat. After only a couple of years or less the battery packs have lost nearly 40% of their capacity. Granted, Nissan has bought a couple of those cars back, but this shouldn't be or become the norm. This rush to get their evs on the market so as not to miss out on what they hope will become a wave has makers putting junk into drivers hands.

Test them side by side on the same trip
All these vehicles should be tested side by side on the same route and the results published, that would allow a side by side comparison that is factual; especially if all the different drivers rotated through all the cars and the numbers were averaged together to form a true picture of each vehicles performance, instead of which drive has a "egg" between their foot and the "gas" pedal...

Price?
You forgot to tell us one of the most important things about this car. How much does it cost?

MPGe
To the author: you must have your number smixed up, because it is impossible to get a combined economy greater than both the city and highway ratings.

To everyone else: MPGe is the miles per gallon equivalent for the car. What that means is miles one can drive on the equivalent amount of energy contained in one gallon of gas, which for electricity is about 33.7 kilowatt/hours. Futhermore, depending on where you live, this can make electricity even better, since for my situation 33.7 Kwh is about $3.37 which is the same price of the 91 octane gas I put in the same car. Then one considers that I get 25 miles from a gallon of gas, yet for 33.7 Kwh of electricity I travel about 67 miles.

MPGe and Rankings
The author's posted combined MPGe figures are likely wrong, or the highway or city figure must be higher than reported here. And the Fiat doesn't seem to outrank the Scion or Fit EV's, so what are we missing? Is the "best in class" simply referring to the class of small cars that can't fit more than two people? If so, then yes, it beats the Smart...

What say you, Channtal?

Apologies
You are right! I mistyped the city MPGe rating. I have corrected it in the article.

Thanks!
