Mixing grapefruits and meds worse than we thought

It’s not too uncommon for a physician to warn against mixing medications with alcohol. But grapefruits? Researchers say these citruses could pose a serious threat if consumed with certain drugs, and a report released Monday suggests the number of medications for which these side effects apply is more than twice what was previously thought.

The research, conducted by University of Western Ontario scientists, appeared Monday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. While four years ago only 17 medications were identified as reacting badly with grapefruit, that number has jumped to 43 in 2012.

The side effects–which range in severity and include heart and kidney problems, difficulty breathing, blood clots, and sudden death–occur when furanocoumarin, a chemical in grapefruits, binds with enzymes and prevents them from properly breaking down drugs.

Researchers said there was, “a lack of knowledge about this interaction in the general health care community” and urged health care providers to communicate with their patients when prescribing drugs for which this risk applies. ABC has posted the full list of drugs from the report.

no kind of explanation here
can't you do better than that? It's the drugs that build up, causing harm, not the grapefruit

Yelling "Fire" in a crowded theater?
Fine and dandy, scare everyone with glittering generalities to get web hits, but how about some DETAILS? Exactly which drugs are involved? What about modifying dosage to compensate and enable grapefruit consumption? Is this panic call just about common grapefruit or does it apply to citrus hybrids such as oroblanco, tangelo, pomelo, ugli fruit, etc? There are so many unanswered questions here that this article ought be retracted!

List is there
At the end of the second paragraph is a link to another article and a list of drugs.

It almost looks like a warning label should be posted over the grapefruit display.
Even worst, there are several other citrus fruits causing the same problem. One is the sevile orange, frequently used in orange marmalade.

A link is not the same as "There"
Yes, on 2nd reading I saw that link, but it shouldn't require that extra effort.
Having been on "statins" for several years, I always wondered that, if grapefruit increases the potency of the drugs, why don't they just decrease the dosage and let us eat grapefruit? Answer: Fewer BIG Pharma profits!

Thank You
There is a warning regarding grapefruit on one of the medications I take only as needed. Therefore, if and when I take it I avoid grapefruit and opt for other fruits. I really never knew why it was recommended to avoid grapefruit while taking the medication and now I know it's something I need to look into and not brush aside. I appreciate your article.
