Making electric cars less quiet

By | January 8, 2013, 3:00 AM PST

With electric vehicles on the roads in increasing numbers, the question emerges time and again: are EVs too quiet? Does the lack of an engine rumble make them a danger to others on the road?

The issue has been a persistent concern. Now, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has taken the next step and proposed rules requiring automakers to build in sounds for their electric models when they are traveling at less than 18 miles per hour. The move is meant to reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians, who may not hear the cars nearby.

Following an earlier congressional mandate requiring a minimum sound standard for EVs, some car companies have already taken the initiative. Nissan has already developed a whirring noise for its electric Leaf model. In 2011, Ford even looked to its customers to select a sound to make its electric Focus model noisier.

The NHTSA estimates that the new regulation would prevent as many as 2,800 injuries to pedestrians or cyclists. Though the rule must go through a 60-day comment period before it is finalized, once it is in place automakers will have three years to comply with the regulation.

Making electric cars less quiet
Seems rather ironic to me. Electric cars need to be made louder to protect pedestrians and cyclists. At the same time motorcycles need to be made quieter to make them even more susceptible to being hit by motor vehicles.

Loud pipes do not save lives.
They merely make it impossible to hear traffic around you. If you are depending on loud pipes to stay alive on a motorcycle, you should not be riding.

Actually
Most of the time the pipes exit behind the rider, and doesn't affect the rider much. I personally have blipped my throttle to get a distracted car driver's attention. It's not so much that people DEPEND on loud pipes, but when you're dealing with the brain-dead morons who drive most cars, every little bit helps.

Missed opportunity
There is too much noise in our culture. I was looking forward to the diminishing sound of traffic in the next 30 years. With the advent of proximity sensors on vehicles this is something that should not be considered. People with vision problems may have a legitimate concern, but there are better ways to deal with the issue. Turn the jukebox up and everyone must raise their voice to be heard and soon the room volume becomes untenable. There is more to be said for "quiet".

Tires
The main sound I hear from many gasoline-engined cars today is the sound of the tires on the road. I suppose that noise could get lost in city traffic, though. Hopefully, the volume of the sound emitted by electric cars will be minimal.

I agree
AlanLaRue has a valid point. Most noise heard by pedestrians emanating from modern cars comes from the rolling of the tires on the asphalt. Over the years, gasoline-powered cars have become increasingly more silent and at idle or low speeds it is difficult to hear the sound of the engines over the "roar" of the tires. I myself have mistakenly turned the ignition of my car more than a few times while it was already turned on just because I couldn't here the engine running! I honestly don't think it is necessary to increase the noise of EVs and I'm with dlangdon01 in hoping that traffic will become more silent in the future.

Musical instrument for your feet.
Good hearing and awareness will be better than making noise... ping.

Fake Muffler
I think this is a great idea. It sounds a little weird, but I can imagine many scenarios where a simple sound can prevent a disaster. I like the idea of mimicking natural car sounds, like adding a fake muffler.

natural car sounds?
The sound of a car is completely unnatural! I hope this gets bounced. I would love quiet!

Great news
I know several individuals who are visually impaired who are thrilled about this. For those who have to rely heavily on their sense of hearing, not being able to hear something that can kill you is a scary thing. It doesn't have to be as loud as a Harley, but some noise is certainly better than none.

cars that watch for people
I think with the advent of self-driving automobiles, eventually, this will flip so that pedestrians and cyclists will be avoided by cars' navigation/collision avoidance systems. There are already cars that will stop the car if it detects something behind it while backing up. And I agree that the volume level of sound is irrelevant because many pedestrians have headphones on. Do we make all cars even noisier to cut through the music pounding in their head? No, of course not. So it comes back to let's avoid accidents all together.

Electric vehicle noise
Most ICE vehicles are virtually silent at speeds under 10 kph, over 10 kph Tyre noise is noticeable in all vehicles. this noise maker could be utilized when reversing , such as a reversing alarm(eg a truck) . Technology exists in for vehicles to apply brakes when a hazard is detected with no input from the driver this could be mandatory for all vehicles. What will we do with bicycles that have just a human operated bell? which reminds me , All vehicles have driver operated warning devices!

Clippity-Clop, Clippity-Clop...
May I suggest the sound of horses traveling down a roadway? It for certain will make heads turn in that direction.

Just need to play that sound over a speaker mounted in front of the vehicle.

Alternately, how about using square tires on those vehicles? The sound of that will certainly turn heads.

Let's not forget it is the driver's responsibility to avoid pedestrians.
I know it's hard when you're wrapped up in a cell phone conversation but the driver in command of the automobile is still responsible, legally and morally. If you can't handle it, take the bus.

silent cars
I agree with skf. Like a ships captain, the driver is responsible for following the rules of the road, the safety of the vessel and all it's passengers. They are equipped with warning devices and navigational aids abound.

And It Goes Ditto For The Pedestrians ...
With the too many I have seen not paying attention to the where (and mostly the when) they are walking into the street. Against the Cross Walk Signal - or a Flat Out Jay-Walking.
