The variety of LEDs bulbs sold at big box retail stores and online can leave consumers overwhelmed and eventually cause some to turn back to what they know: the old incandescent.
The Edison Foundation's Institute for Electric Efficiency commissioned sustainability management firm Ecova to determine the 10 best LED reflector bulbs on the market today. The findings for the top PAR30 and PAR38 lights are posted on www.TopTenUSA.org
, a non-profit that ranks products for energy efficiency.
The study measured the LED reflector bulb's energy efficiency, payback period, lifetime cost savings, how it compared with a halogen incandescent reflector bulb in light quality and dimming capability. The complete findings can be accessed at the IEE.
The overall winner is Technical Consumer Products' 17-watt LED parabolic aluminized reflector (PAR) 38 bulb. When compared with an equivalent 90-watt PAR38 halogen incandescent bulb, the winning LED, which costs $42, has a lifetime cost savings of $200, a payback period of 4.1 years and an estimated useful life of 23 years, according to the analysis.
