In India, a 10-story tower built in just 48 hours

By | December 1, 2012, 12:25 PM PST

The incredibly speedy construction of prefabricated towers so popular in China has officially made its way over to India.

Today (December 1), the country welcomed a 10-story building that was put up in just 48-hours.

Aptly named “Instacon,” the newly finished tower sits in the town of Mohali, a suburb of Chandigarh in northwest India. The 10-story tower was completed today after a team of engineers, technicians and supervisors began work on its construction on Thursday afternoon.

The man in charge of the entire project, entrepreneur Harpal Singh, came up with the rapid construction process after becoming increasingly frustrated with the development of his own house, which took two years. To ensure that Instacon would be completed promptly, Singh and his infrastructure company, Synergy Thrislington, used prefabricated components that were assembled beforehand in a nearby factory.

“All the components have been manufactured already, doors that can be pre-fitted, water supply components, wiring, sanitation, air conditioned ducts and everything else,” Singh said in a statement before construction began. “These will be shifted in state-of-the-art transporting vehicles to the actual site for installation.”

With more than 200 workers, 200 tons of steel and three cranes, the tower, which has been built to withstand high magnitude earthquakes, stood three floors high after only six hours, seven floors after 24 hours and 10 floors at 48 hours.

Built or assembled?
To be accurate in the reporting of this story, I suggest the building was assembled in 48 hours, not built. The fact that 10 stories can be assembled at all is pretty amazing but the term "built" is just inaccurate. Time to add "assembled" the the list of terms used to describe buildings.

So True
It would be very interesting to know when the planning began, how long was the site preparation, ect. Then throw in 24/2 (24 hours a day for 2 days) and 200 workers almost tripping over each other. And the risk taking, like all the section of a deck with supplies hoisted in one move with workers(shown in the video).

It is a great accomplishment but one that could be done because weaker work rules don't protect the workers but allows for speedier construction.

Great Job
In a country where things move at molasses speed, this is really heartwarming to note that one man came up with an idea to beat all odds and get the job done -- whether it is built or assembled. I guess they do not have union workers happy

Total Project Costs?
Would be interesting to see the total project costs of modular vs conventional building ie to see the trade-off between time and resources.

In the shipping industry, they stack containers 10 stacks high as a matter of routine!

That's quite fast
Its my first time to hear that somebody built a building in just 2 days. What i doubt is the quality of the building. I doubt if it will be safe for the public. There are safe place like Makati Office Space for Rent that will guarantee your safety.
