Hyundai delays payments by federal employees caught in U.S. gov shutdown
Hyundai Motor America is deferring payments from U.S. federal employees furloughed during the government shutdown.
The Costa Mesa, Calif.,-based firm announced on Tuesday that all auto loan and lease payments during the shutdown -- which will only cease once the two houses of Congress have agreed on a fiscal budget -- will be delayed for Hyundai customers who are federal employees.
The automaker says that for as long as owners are out of work, payment relief will be offered. Furloughed employees who wish to buy a car in October will be offered a 90-day payment deferral.
John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America said:
"We recognize the impact on family budgets that the furlough will drive. Like we did almost four years ago when we launched Hyundai Assurance, this is our way of saying 'We've got your back' during this uncertain time."
It is estimated that over 800,000 workers will not get paid during the shutdown.
The programme is available to all customers who have financed their purchase or lease through Hyundai Finance America.
