Hiring in Detroit: GM moves 1,500 IT jobs back home

By | October 9, 2012, 5:56 AM PDT

After years of outsourcing information technology jobs, one of the world’s largest automakers, GM announced it will hire 1,500 high-tech workers over the next few years in suburban Detroit.

This “Innovation Center” in Warren, Michigan is one of four planned in the United States that will employ an estimated 10,000 workers. The other, announced last month, will be in Austin, Texas. The locations of the other two have yet to be announced.

“We’re currently seeking the next generation of game-changers to help us usher in a new age of automotive innovation at GM,” said GM Chief Information Officer Randy Mott.

The plan to move IT jobs back to Detroit is part of a larger initiative by the company to reduce outsourcing of IT services by 90 percent. As Reuters reports, GM will also reduce its data centers from 23 worldwide to two, both in Michigan.

Whether this move will make GM a leader in auto tech is yet to be seen, but the company says it expects to see operational cost decrease while innovation increases.

Better late than ... well ... TOO late.
If there was one area I would have supported using tax incentives for "social engineering", it would be to curtail the export of jobs out of the country. Instead, our tax structure probably had a lot to do with outsourcing becoming so popular.
Now, with GM standing for Government Motors, though, it is particularly unacceptable for large parts of their work-force to be outsourced internationally. Glad to see they're bringing "good jobs" (right now, a lot of folks think any job would be a good job) back into the US. It's the first positive move since the government takeover that I've seen.

Re: Better late than ... well ... TOO late.
"It's the first positive move since the government takeover that I've seen." So also saving the American auto industry in general isn't a 'positive move???' Interesting...

And while I agree w/ you to some extent that "a lot of folks think 'any job' would be a good job," however considering the increasing cost-of-living expenses, a "good job" means the difference between keeping your home, paying for monthly transportation costs (in the NYC area means a LOT), or food for an entire family on a consistent basis, etc. So I think it's important to point out that those 'good jobs' means ALL the difference in the world to many people. In fact it's that kind of 'you should be happy to have a job' mentality by many corporations that has helped stagnate, even decrease wages and salaries for many Americans, while helping to increase poverty stats.

You're not an "member of staff" of General Motors, you're not a "staffer" at.You're not definite by your job designation and you're not curbed by your job explanation. http://www.carlinhall.co.uk/
