Early next year, General Motors plans to integrate Apple’s voice-assistant software Siri into two of its new smaller, budget Chevrolet models–the Spark and Sonic.
The automaker made the announcement Tuesday at the Los Angeles International Auto Show.
The two car models will be equipped with the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system. Customers can connect a compatible iPhone running iOS6 with the MyLink radio via Bluetooth.
Owners can then use the steering wheel voice activation button to begin and end sessions with Siri while in “Eyes Free” mode, which allows users to interact with their iPhone using their voice while keeping the device’s screen from lighting up. In other words, drivers will be able to use Siri without risking distraction.
Owners of the Spark and Sonic RS who use Siri in “Eyes Free” mode will be able to make voice-activated, hands-free calls, play songs in the iTunes library as well as switch music sources from AM/FM radio to iPod mode. Users also will be able to listen to and compose and send text messages to a phone number or anyone saved in contacts.
GM won’t be the only automaker to add Siri’s Eyes Free technology to its new car models over the next year. At the World Wide Developers Conference in June, Apple said Siri would be installed in cars made by Toyota, GM, Merecedes, BMW, Honda, Audi, Chrysler, Land Rover and Jaguar.
