Fukushima fuel rods removed from harm's way
— By Charlie Osborne on November 19, 2013, 12:47 AM PST
The fuel rods have been outside of any reactor core for at least 3 years. That makes them safe to store in air-cooled vaults.
They are not 'bombs' and contain 95% natural, Uranium238, which is not fissile, and is common in all granitic rock, including our granite kitchen counters.
The danger is from radiation from the ~4% of fuel that is fission products, whose decay heat was the original problem and is now quite manageable. As long as rods are moved with shielding (water...), workers and the public are safe. This is how the fuel rods were originally placed in their fuel pools long before the Tohoku quake & tsunami.
Unfortunately, there are some in media who'd love to see something bad happen, since their articles will then sell better. For the rest of us, we expect the workers and overseers will maintain proper procedures and the result will be both tedious and safe.
