Ford’s Glympse tracks your location when driving

By | January 7, 2013, 3:49 AM PST

Taking things a step further from checking-in on Facebook through GPS technology, how would you feel about letting people know where you are when driving?

In a move to boost the interactivity of its cars, automaker Ford announced plans Monday to integrate its location-sharing app Glympse into SYNC in-car connectivity systems. If you’re on the road — especially now mobile phone use when driving is widely banned — you can let your friends and family know exactly where you are (because, of course, that’s not the same kind of distraction as using a mobile).

To use the app, Ford customers can download the service on to their Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry or iOS-powered devices, and then use either Bluetooth or a USB port to connect their phone to a Ford SYNC vehicle.

Once the connection is dealt with, drivers can press the ’sync’ button on the steering wheel and say “Send Glympse” to share their location with a contact on a phone, or post it directly to Twitter and Facebook.

If you only want to share your location for a while, then you can use a timer function to turn off Glympse after an hour or so.

If you’ve let your teenager loose with a SYNC, AppLink-connected car (although I’m not sure that’s wise) it could be used to track them down on the way home from a party, or for working professionals, a means to let others know you’ll be late for a meeting. On the flip side, this kind of technology could also be used to force employees on the road to check-in when they are meant to be at particular locations.

At 2013’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Ford also announced that the SYNC AppLink technology, in partnership with Kaliki Audio Newsstand, can now also be used to curate the top stories in major newspapers and allow drivers to listen to an audio version whilst on the road. The service is free for SYNC users.

“Kaliki demonstrates how we can quickly work with new apps that are adding convenience to the lives of our customers and integrate them into the car through SYNC AppLink,” said Doug VanDagens, global director of Ford Connected Services. “Ford’s goal is to continuously add value to the vehicle through the addition of relevant content and services, such as the great media partners Kaliki brings, and to deliver an exceptional ownership experience.”

AppLink is currently integrated on over one million vehicles, including the 2013 Fiesta, Mustang, Fusion and E-Series.

It's not Ford's App
Glympse is an existing company with an existing app that Ford has partnered with to integrate with their cars.

How is this any different that what Google Maps does?
My wife and I can always track each other with our phones alone; no car interaction required.

And if I had a teenager, I'd much rather track them by cell phone that by car; the cell phone is always with them, the car is not.

Are you talking about Google Latitude?
I have Google Latitude but it's very hit or miss when it comes to tracking. Sometimes location data isn't updated for days. I use a companion app to keep my location more accurate (backtitude on Android). Glympse is a bit different, it's up to the second tracking. I run it on my phone but it's quickly drains your battery since it has the GPS always on and is constantly sending out location updates. Viewers can even see your speed. Try it out, you can install it on your smart phone.

Yes, I was referring to Google "Latitude"...
...which is integrated with "Maps". We've found it to be quite accurate and updates frequently enough. You can have it "ping" if you want an immediate update. Of course, accuracy varies depending on if you have the GPS on or off.

Personally, I'd rather that the car provide the basic infrastructure (mainly power and Bluetooth integration) rather than the apps. People "upgrade" cars relatively infrequently compared to phones, so this kind of speculate tech goes obsolete long before the rest of the car does. I tend to buy cars used and then keep them a long time. So by the time this kind of tech works its way down to me, it's been obsolete for years if it still works at all, and would likely be useless during my ownership.

Really necessary ???
To me this just seems like another "innovation" that companies are trying to convince us we must absolutely have. I can think of only a few instances where traking would/could be deemed necessary - and then it still seems like an invasion rather than an innovation.

I guess I have the most trouble with "those people" that I hear complain about privacy issues and then turn-around and tell everyone their history, show pictures of their family and home, post pictures of the kids and then want to tell anyone who will listen where they are and what they are doing every moment of their life. REALLY??? Is your life so important that the world MUST know where and what for your current activities?
(It's bad enough that media shoves the Kardasians down our throats)

No, but it does have it's uses
This isn't like Facebook where everyone can track you. You have to send a 'Glympse' it to individuals and those people have to open up a web page or their Glympse app to see your location.

It's sort of a toy. I use it with family so if they are expecting me then can see exactly where I am.

Kardasians?
You mean that thing makes you watch old ST-DS9 re-runs? I hate Cardasians/Kardashians, whatever - same thing different channel. Was bad then, is bad now.

In any case, I don't want something tracking me around, info being sold to who knows whom.

To go along with that, I don't post useless gobble-gabble and minutia on FB or elsewhere but I know people who do - and I deny them "news" from me lest they spew it far and wide for lack of anything interesting about themselves to discuss.

As long as it has a hardware 'off' switch, fine by me.
In hardware we trust.

Glympse breaks Google/Apple Barriers
Glympse is amazing! I've been using it with my friends and every time they get a glympse notification, they're amazed at how easy it is to just tap a link and see where I'm at.

The great thing about Glympse is that, while you need it to share your location, the people you share them TO can view it on any device, independent of any OS restrictions or App requirements. All it needs is a browser. Much better than Find My Friends or Google Latitude.

It's a lot safer than texting while driving and the integration with Ford vehicles will be huge. I live in Canada so AppLink isn't available here yet, but as soon as it is, I'm gonna be making a blog post about Glympse over at http://www.capitalfordlincoln.com so everyone can know!
