Dutch architect to build ‘endless’ 3D printed house

By | January 21, 2013, 3:53 AM PST

A Dutch architect hopes to be able to build a 3D printed house by the end of next year that can support “endless” additions.

Janjaap Ruijssenaars from Amsterdam-based Universe Architecture has designed the so-called “Landscape House” to be created through 3D printing technology. By working with mathematician Rinus Roelofs, the team hopes that they can manufacture housing in segments, to be slotted together to form a complete piece.

Each piece, 19.6 x 29.5 feet (6 x 9 meters) in size, will be printed through a manufacturing-sized printer called D-Shape. However, it has been suggested that while the main frames are completed through 3D printing technology, the layers and joints are reinforced with concrete and fiber glass to make sure the property is supported.

By using 3D printing, the house could not only be added to over time, but could merge with its environment rather than dominate it. Ruijssenaars commented on his inspiration:

“It was a house in Ireland. The location on the coast is so beautiful that we want the design to reflect the nature. Landscapes are endless and our question was whether we can design a home that has no beginning and no end.”

The project is expected to take over a year, and will potentially be complete by the end of 2014.
