Car sharing takes off in Miami

By | November 12, 2012, 3:00 AM PST

Last July, Daimler’s car2go car-sharing service debuted in Miami. Since then, the system has gained traction, with 6,000 members who have taken 35,000 trips in the city’s 240 Smart ForTwo vehicles.

Given the level of demand for the service, car2go recently announced that beginning on November 12, it would stop allowing long-term reservations for its vehicles. Since the average trip takes less than a half hour and most reservations are made shortly before the rental time, the move is intended to make more cars available at any given time.

Currently, car2go charges its Miami members 38 cents a minute, or $13.99 per hour. The service’s popularity among Miami’s urban dwellers suggests that car sharing has become a viable and popular alternative to owning a car. While popular in Miami, it remains to be seen if such models will gain widespread traction in other U.S. cities as well.

Insurance?
I couldn't find anywhere on their web site of required insurance. I'd think that it would be required for membership.

Truck or van rental?
This is a good idea for urban dwellers without cars, but I would like to see rentals for larger vehicles that can transport larger items. We have two smaller electric vehicles, and have occasional need for moving furniture or plywood. People buy large SUVs or trucks so they can "have one when they need it" - in the meantime 95% of their driving is single-occupant commutes or errands. If larger vehicles were easy to rent or borrow, perhaps people would buy fewer gas guzzlers.
