Apple iPhone 5 sales in China top 2 million (in just three days)

By | December 17, 2012, 9:54 AM PST

Apple’s launch of the iPhone 5 in China might have kicked off with a whimper Friday at the company’s flagship store in Beijing. But sales picked up considerable speed and ended up setting a new record for first weekend sales in China, Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement.

Apple sold more than 2 million of its iPhone 5s in China just three days after its launch Dec. 14. That’s nearly the same number of iPhone 4S units sold in China for the entire third quarter, according to statistics from research firm Analysys International reported the WSJ.

More records could be broken as the iPhone 5 becomes available in more than 100 countries by the end of the month, the fastest iPhone rollout in the company’s history.

The iPhone also was launched Friday in a number of other large markets including Brazil, Indonesia, Israel, Malaysia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Taiwan. This coming Friday the iPhone will be available for sale in a number of African nations as well as in the Carribbean and southeast Asia.
