High-fiber breakfast bars, cereal, oatmeal–that’s one thing. But high fiber Pepsi? On Tuesday, Japan debuted “Pepsi Special,” which the company advertises as a fat-blocking soda. The key ingredient is dextrin, a fiber that’s often used to aid in digestion.

In a 2006 study, Japanese scientists found a link between dextrin consumption and the amount of fat absorbed from food in lab rats, which allows them to bill this fiber-fortified soda as fat-blocking. In fairness, there are benefits to increasing the amount of fiber in your diet if you’re trying to lose weight. So when this soda claims to be “fat-blocking,” it’s more than just a marketing ploy.

But still. High fiber soda? As James Hamblin of the Atlantic argues, drinking fiber-fortified soda is probably better for you than drinking regular soda. But at the end of the day, you’re still drinking soda and there are much healthier ways to build “fat-blocking” fiber into your diet.

Not so crazy
Especially if it's diet soda. Contrary to popular belief, people like to drink soda and eat high-fat food. If people ate healthy all the time, we wouldn't be having this discussion.
For me, the big news is that there is a market for this in Japan. I thought none of them were fat.
