A car for women? At Honda, yes

By | October 30, 2012, 11:18 AM PDT

What does a car for women look like, exactly?

Does it look differently than a car for a man? What, pray tell, is a gender-specific car?

I don’t know the answers to those questions but apparently Honda does. The Japanese automaker is offering a Honda Fit subcompact designed specifically for women — it’s badged “She’s” — that’s pink on the outside (though it can also be had in “eyeliner brown,” black or white), pink on the inside (yes, even the stitching) and in many ways a throwback to the 1950s.

Except it’s not. The vehicle is being marketed directly to young women in Japan, a country that specializes in all things “cute.” (This is, after all, land from which Hello Kitty hails.) Whether it’s encouraging stereotypes or reflecting them, you tell me. (The folks at NBC’s Today show seem to like it, despite the girly frills.)

Would it be well-received in the U.S. or Europe? I wager not.

A highly visible play for a specific demographic? Absolutely.

Thanks
I was hoping there would be some female readers out there who would push back on this.

My wife...
Hating pink isn't a necessary qualification for hating this.. My wife's favourite colour is pink, but I'm pretty sure she wouldn't be seen dead in it.

Cars for Women
Car companies have been making cars for women, and cars for men, for years and years.

Chevrolet Corvette - marketed to men.
Ford EXP - designed for women.

Funny detail to add to this
VW's latest Beetle is actually going after men: black color, red trim, more "aggressive" (read: less bulbous) styling.

Testosterone not available in all models!

1950's color, not in the highest regard for cars today
In older houses can still be seen the pink tile in the bathroom, etc.. the color was really in fashion then. As a man I wouldn't want to own a pink toyota or even be seen in it, esp. if having to pass though special parts of town where there are males that would line up to buy one.

I don't think even Hello Kitty would like this pink color scheme.
Is it cute? Maybe, but the lady in the picture is cuter. In any case, enjoy the Japanese fad. Always interesting to hear of other cultures and their marketing.

Whatever sells!
Auto companies understand that certain things have a short shelf-life, and if they can sell a whole lot of them for a couple of years, they do it. My guess is that they could sell enough of them in the U.S. to at least offer the color for a couple of years.

From the picture, it doesn't seem to be an awful pink. Sort of a "champagne" color.

But there would be quite an uproar from some feminists!

Yeah, I don't think Pepto pink would do so well.
Except for perhaps Perez Hilton. Or the folks at Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

For oenophiles, rosé.

Definitely getting one for my daughter.
I'm definitely getting one for my daughter. It would go PERFECTLY with her custom "Hello Kitty" AR-15.

(Best comment I overheard an ex-boyfriend make: "Are you insane?! I just told you she fights like a girl!")

Why not a maintenance-free car for women?
Only some women would fancy style over utility. But I am convinced, that most women would like a mainenance-free automobile. Furthermore I am equally sure Honda could produce one. I.e. a couple of gallons of Synthetic oil, and a good oil cleaner, might obviate the need for oil changes till it's time to trade the car for a new model.

Cars for women a failure
The 1955 Dodge La Femme was a bust, and that was before the Feminist Movement!
