9 million new iPhones sold in first weekend, a new Apple record

Apple had a good weekend.

Maybe it was the fact that people are drawn to gold or maybe it has to do with the new iPhone being available in China on its release day for the first time, but either way Apple had a record-breaking weekend after releasing its latest versions of the iPhone last week.

Apple announced today that 9 million iPhones were sold over the weekend (in the three days since the launch of the iPhone 5s and 5c) making it Apple's "best iPhone launch yet" and crushing analyst expectations that, at best, 7.75 million phones would be sold. Apple had 5 million sales of the iPhone 5 during its opening weekend last year.

With this opening push, according to one analyst, iPhone 5s and 5c already represent nearly 1.5 percent of all iPhones in the United States, with the iPhone 5s outselling the 5c by more than three-to-one. The initial supply of the iPhone 5s has already sold out.

But it wasn't just a good weekend for Apple because of the new phones. Its new operating system, iOS 7, had the fastest upgrade in history. More than 200 million devices now use the new OS, with more iPhone users already using iOS 7 than iOS 6.

The one bit of bad news for Apple? The fingerprint scanner has already been hacked.

And some bad news for customers of the new iPhone? It'll probably break sooner than the iPhone 5.
