‘Neutered’ iPads debut at U.S. government

By | February 11, 2013, 2:42 AM PST

iPads stripped of their bells and whistles have been approved for use by the U.S. government.

CACI International Inc. has taken the iconic tablet computer, the iPad, and made it suitable for work within the security-conscious U.S. government, according to Bloomberg. “Thousands” of Apple’s tablets have been altered so far to make them more secure, not by changing the software, but the hardware.

Dan Allen, CACI’s chief executive officer, told the publication that the finished product is basically a “neutered iPad,” and the firm is currently discussing “how to effectively brand it.” The Arlington, Virginia-based firm says that by removing hardware features considered a potential risk to security — such as Wi-Fi and camera features — the tablets can be made secure enough that confidential data cannot be stolen, and images cannot be taken.

Allen also said that iPads currently used within the U.S. government were “most likely a product that either came from us or came from someone we work with.”

Although CACI declined to comment on exactly what changes have taken place in the neutered iPads, being able to tailor tablets for governmental use may become a threat to BlackBerry, which has long held a place in governmental settings due to mobile encryption and security levels. However, Google’s Android is also gaining traction in military and governmental settings, as the Defense Department announced last year it planned to open its networks to both iPhones and Android-based smartphones.

Adopting this kind of mobile technology can certainly improve efficiency and organization, but is not without its share of problems. Last year, the U.S. Air Force withdrew plans to purchase thousands of iPads after concerns were raised over security software that originated in Russia.

Those changes effectively defeat the whole purpose for having iPads,
and the resulting product ends up being something completely different from what Apple intended to put in the market.

Those "iPads" end up being nothing more than the very dumb terminals which people used in the early days of computers, when the mainframe ruled, and the dumb terminals were used as input/output devices.

So, why even bother? Why not just bring back the dumb terminals of the past in smaller sizes and better graphics capabilities? That kind of device would cost, perhaps, $100-150, and not the $500 that the government might be paying for those "would be iPads"?

What a friggin moron...
You weren't even born when we had terminals and you are clueless as to what they even were. Here is a clue, they didn't have graphics capabilities brainiac. And if you could comprehend what you read, you would know that hardware was altered (removed).

Yes, we all know you hate all things Apple and that you have an Apple chip on your shoulders the size of your ginormous super-sized waist. Get over it troll-boi. Apple makes some cool technology that you don't have to be a super dork to be able to use. Microsoft and Roid devices suck and are perfect for ihater losers like you.

Actually, there were "dumb" terminals with graphics capabilities.
I recall playing with a DEC GIGI in the late '70s, which was novel at the time because it was actually in color at a time when everything else was either green or occasionally amber. Graphic terminals were also common in engineering environments running mainframe-based cad applications.

Not only that, but the predecessors to todays toys, aka: iPads, already had
graphics capabilities, all the way back in the 1970s. Most dumb terminals didn't have graphics capabilities because they didn't need them for what they were used for.

Also, by the time there was a demand for them...
...PCs had become cheap and capable enough to render terminals non-competitive.

Read carefully, and you'll note that, you are the idiot and moron
in this discussion and all other discussions.

Notice the sentence: "Why not just bring back the dumb terminals of the past in smaller sizes and better graphics capabilities"? That's an acknowledgement that, those dumb terminal had no graphics capabilities. "Better" is not a word that you're familiar with, I gather. Better means, an improvement on what was there before, even if there was nothing at all. IDIOT!!!

And, you're still fail with your reading comprehension on the next part, where you mention that, hardware was removed. Obviously, you have a hard time reading a whole post for context, where I mention that, the resulting "iPad" is no better than a dumb terminal, because, dumb terminals didn't have cameras or wi-fi connectivity. See that part where I wrote: "That kind of device would cost, perhaps, $100-150"? That's would be the price of a dumb terminal nowadays, and it would be the equal of the iPad that results from the removal of the parts mentioned. You're either too quick to call somebody a moron or a troll, or you're too brainless to even understand what others write.

And, you admit that, you're the one trolling, when you make such an emotional defense of Apple. You don't know if I do or do not use Apple devices (which I do, but, it's mostly relegated to toy status now, where my daughter lets her daughters use it for playing games and using it as a piano, like the ones shown in the commercial).

And, dude!, I had 35 years mainframe experience total, before moving on to the PC side of computing. Dumb terminals is all that I used, right after the whole tech world was graduated from punched-cards and tabulating machines. You have, at one time or another, used the dumb terminals which I programmed, those being the ATM machines and credit card authorization machines at your local retailer and bank stations. But, while ATMs do have some "smart tech" inside them, the dumb terminals which I equate the "dumbed-down" iPads to, are the dumb screens which were used by people in the 70s and 80s, where I gained most of my programming and overall IT experience.

Total experience in the IT field, for me, is probably more than 4 times your age, which I'm assuming you're about 10 years old or less? You're age is around 10 years, or your mental age is right about there. 'Cause, nobody with a shred of experience in the real world, would come up with the total nonsense you do. Furthermore, defending Apple like they're your parents, shows a total lack of maturity. Nobody should be so in love with a product or a company. It's a mental disorder, and should be taken care of.

Microsoft for me represents, just another tech company, and I use what's best for me and my professional needs. Apple, well, they're just another tech company which, if I ever get my current project completed, will be useful because of the number of consumers who do use Apple's stuff. To me, Apple is just another company which could assist in getting my project implemented. And, BTW, the iKnow idea is one which I am working on, but not with that name.

Now, get some smarts, or grow up, or stop the insanity and immaturity, and start living in the real world, where Apple should not be thought of as a parent that needs defending.
