Say goodbye to the utility man coming by your house and reading your meter to calculate your energy usage. Raj Vaswani, CTO of Silver Spring Networks and his team are developing new technologies that will network meters to the grid. The new smart meters allow your utility company to read and measure your energy use remotely and will soon help consumers monitor and control how much energy they consume.

Just last week a utility guy from PG&E came out and installed a new digital meter at my home. Maybe the last time I see any meter readers!!
My utility, Salt River Project (srp.net), has already installed a smart meter on our home. When used with our account information it is easy to see the results of conservation during time-of-use peak periods. I think of it as seeing a visual reward for time-shifting the dryer and most cooking/baking outside of the peak period and reducing the amount of air conditioning needed to remove any residual heat generated during peak periods. I am a fan of this.
